'Ala al-Din Hasan Shah Bahmani

'Ala al-Din Hasan Shah Bahmani
(?-1359)
The founder of the Bahmani kingdom, Hasan Gangu was one of Muhammad bin Tughlaq's officers who revolted in the Deccan in 1347. The rebels put up Hasan Gangu as the king with the title 'Ala-al Din Hasan Shah Bahmani on 13 August 1347. He claimed descent from the Persian monarch Bahman bin Isfandyar. There is a parallel tradition recorded in the 17th century that assigns him a Hindu origin. The Bahmani practice of appointing Brahmans as their ministers is explained with reference to this tradition. 'Ala al-Din Hasan Shah chose Gulbarga as his capital. He divided his kingdom into territorial divisions called tarafs. Soon his sway extended from east of Daulatabad to Bhongir, and from the Wainganga River in the north to Krishna in the south. Before his death in 1359, 'Ala al-Din Hasan Shah nominated his son Muhammad to the throne.
